ABOUT SOLIDARITY SUNDAYS
The idea for Solidarity Sundays came in 2015, when Kate Schatz & Leslie Van Every, two fed-up feminist friends decided to just DO SOMETHING. For our first meeting, in January 2016, we invited friends to come over & take action on gun control. Sixty people showed up, & in one day we made almost 1,000 phone calls/emails.
The group’s original name was Suffragette Sundays, as we were also focused on the 2016 election. We heard feedback that the name felt problematic because of the racist history of many in the Suffrage movement; we listened, agreed, & changed the name to something more inclusive & indicative of what is needed most: SOLIDARITY & ACTION.
On the 2nd Sunday of each month, we gather in a private home to take ACTION on immediate issues that matter. The location will be announced in a posted FB invite. We make phone calls & write letters to elected representatives; bring in guest speakers; organize, educate, & empower on nationwide & hyper-local issues. Attendees get contact info & sample scripts to make the process of contacting elected officials easy. There are snacks, drinks, conversations & childcare!
Solidarity Sundays began in Alameda, CA, & is where the main meetings are based. Affiliate groups are springing up all over the country [LIST OF CONFIRMED CITIES FOR 12/11 MEETING COMING] If you are interested in starting your own local chapter, please email kateschatz at gmail for more info.
The current core organizers & moderators are Kate Schatz, Leslie Van Every, & Jennye Garibaldi.
CORE BELIEFS
In our virtual & real-world spaces, we believe that the following are unequivocally REAL, URGENT, & NOT up for debate:
-Racism & White Supremacy
-White Privilege
-Misogyny
-Homophobia/Transphobia
-Ableism
-Islamophobia
We commit to resisting all of these, & have zero tolerance for even a whiff of any of it. If this sounds intense, it’s because it is. If it sounds TOO intense, this may not be the space for you.
Core Issues: Racial Justice; the Environment; LGBTQ/Reproductive/Immigrant Rights; Gun Control; & Civil Liberties.
FB GROUP GUIDELINES
Mods approve all posts, & general guidelines are:
-No memes

-Respectful, positive comments ONLY—please no insults. Report problems to a mod.
Finally, we don’t claim to be a “safe space” because that’s not something we can 100% guarantee. As mods, we’ll do our best to keep it safe, & ask all to do the same.
